Set to open in 2020-2021, The Westside Quarry Park will become the Jewel of the Atlanta Beltline. For a century, The Bellwood Quarry was utilized for granite mining and can be credited with the early road construction in and around the metro Atlanta area.
The Atlanta Beltline is a 22-mile multi-use trail built over older rail-road tracks that weave through many of Atlanta’s historic in-town neighborhoods. One of the largest urban revitalization projects in the country, Atlanta’s Beltline opens the city to parks and green spaces throughout the metro Atlanta connecting neighborhood to neighborhood.
The city of Atlanta began drawing up plans almost a decade ago and since that time, a lot has been accomplished. The final plans include a music amphitheater, skate park, dog park, sports fields and curved walking trails. In addition to becoming the largest greenspace in Atlanta (larger than Piedmont Park) at 300-acres, the park not only brings a welcome recreational area but also gifts Atlanta with a 30 day emergency water source (currently emergency water for metro Atlanta is an abysmal 3 day supply).
Although the park will be completed in multiple phases, the park will open to the public during phase 1 which will include open meadows, walking/hiking trails and a grand overlook highlighting the stunning Atlanta skyline that overlooks the lake filled quarry!
